Tyre maintenance: the complete guide

Expert advice on tyre maintenance Depending on how your mind works, you might find the subject of rubber very exciting. Or you might not. In the context of car tyres, you’re highly unlikely to find it even remotely interesting, but death and destruction can be fascinating subjects, and where sub-standard tyres are concerned, carnage is more than just a remote possibility. Bearing this in mind, it’s amazing how many drivers put zero effort into checking their tyres, even occasionally. According to one Michelin survey, more than a third (36%) of UK drivers are motoring on dangerously under-inflated tyres. The tyre maker checked over 4500 cars during a single national roadshow and it found that just one-third of cars (34%) were sitting on correctly inflated tyres while more than one in 20 (6%) had a puncture.
Avoid Buying a Halloween Horror with an HPI Check

With witching season upon us, we want to protect buyers from cars that may go bump in the night. Horror stories aren’t just for halloween, 1 in 3 cars checked by HPI uncovers a gory history. This shows that some sellers have more tricks than treats for unsuspecting buyers.
Reputational risk a clocking conundrum for dealers

HPI urges dealers to protect themselves from the risks Over 70% of dealers surveyed by HPI, the automotive technology solutions provider, are concerned about damaging their reputation by inadvertently selling on a clocked vehicle. With 1 in 20 cars checked with HPI recorded as having a discrepant mileage, dealers are right to be fearful of clocked cars. Also high on the list of concerns is the safety risks dealers expose customers to by selling on a clocked car. Interestingly, the threat of a judicial sentence is a relatively low concern by comparison, despite the fact that selling on a vehicle that has a wrong mileage reading would be a ‘false trade description’ and therefore could constitute a criminal offence. A false trade description or a failure to comply with the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, is a breach of the law.
How to buy a personal registration number for your car
Personal Registration Number Plate It doesn’t matter what kind of car you drive, its appearance will be smartened up by a personal number plate. Whether it’s your initials as part of a dateless registration or the type of car you drive that’s on display, a carefully chosen plate will make your car that bit more personal to you. Unfortunately you’ll have to put your hand in your pocket if you want to acquire a personal plate, but the good news is that if you buy something with wider appeal, it could prove to be quite an investment. Take a look at the DVLA Personalised Registrations website and you’ll see that prices start at £250, including VAT and all fees. The problem is, the DVLA doesn’t put its best numbers up for general sale; they’re always reserved for one of its auctions where they’re likely to achieve a higher price.
How aftermarket car warranty works

Nobody wants to be landed with a big repair bill if their car breaks down, but car ownership is rarely plain sailing and the occasional hefty invoice is pretty much guaranteed. After all, cars are complex machines and parts are bound to wear out or break from time to time. When this happens the sudden impact on your finances can be painful. There is a way of evening out your expenditure though, and that’s to buy an aftermarket car warranty which works in the same way as insurance. Indeed, some providers call it a Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI) policy, but it’s not tied to your car insurance and your occupation, age or where you live won’t affect the premiums.
How do Private Registration Plates work?

Personal Registrations According to the DVLA, around one in 10 cars on UK roads now wears a personal registration plate. When the registration A1 was issued in London at the end of 1903, Earl Russell queued all night outside the London County Council offices to secure it – so for well over a century there’s been a following for interesting car registrations. Nowadays it’s easier than ever to put a personal registration onto your car, whether you’ve got lots of money to spend, or just a little bit. If you just want to give your car a plate that catches your eye but isn’t likely to be of much to interest to anyone else, you can pick something up from just £50. But read on and you’ll see you can spend rather more than this if you want to really make your car stand out…
What are ghost brokers?

Running a car tends to be expensive, so it’s no wonder drivers are always on the look out for ways to trim their costs. With insurance often one of the biggest overheads for car owners, it’s also one of the areas that’s potentially the easiest to save cash. There are lots of ways to cut your insurance bills, with shopping around being at the top of the pile. But when you’re doing your price comparisons it’s essential that you don’t get duped by a scammer – or ghost broker – selling you a non-existent policy.
Used car buyers set to benefit from the new Consumer Rights Act
HPI urges consumers to be aware of their ‘early right to reject’ www.hpicheck.com On 1st October 2015, some of the biggest changes ever in consumer law will take place and, HPI, provider of the HPI Check®, is urging used car buyers to be aware of their new rights. The Sale of Goods Act is set to be replaced by the Consumer Rights Act 2015. This crucially allows consumers to ask for a full refund in the first 30 days of buying any product that subsequently turns out to be faulty – including cars. Known as the ‘early right to reject’, this new legislation replaces the previous rule, which said retailers only need to repair or replace a faulty item or part.
