Why should I check my car service history?

Verifying a vehicle’s service history can help determine whether the price is fair for what you’re potentially buying.

A proven full service history gives you the confidence that you’re buying a vehicle that has been looked after, while you have full oversight of previous repairs and knowledge of any repeat issues.

Without this information, you could purchase a car that needs urgent repairs – potentially only discovering this when you’re stranded on the roadside awaiting a breakdown service.

Chris Wright Vice President - Solera North Europe
"Before buying a used car, digging into its service history is non-negotiable. It's one of the few ways to confirm that the vehicle has been cared for properly and isn't hiding expensive problems waiting to emerge. Treat it as a massive red flag if a seller can't provide this information. A car with no traceable service history is a gamble, and it's your hard-earned money at stake. Don't take chances on guesswork."

How can I find the service history of a car?

The simplest way to find a vehicle’s service history is to check its service book. This should include details on where the service took place, what type of service the car has had, and any repairs it needed as a result.

General recommendations are for cars to be serviced every 12 months or 12,000 miles. Car adverts may refer to a ‘full service history’ if this has been met or a ‘partial service history’ if some of those milestones have been skipped over.

If you’ve bought a used car with no service book, don’t worry – you can still verify claims made around service history in a car ad.

✔ Contact the garage or manufacturer: If you’ve bought the car, ask the previous owner which garage was used for claimed services. There’s a good chance that the garage will have the details of previous services on record. Manufacturers may also have this information if services have been done at their approved garages. If you’re yet to buy the car, you’ll need to ask the current owner to do this for you. If they’re unwilling to help, it may be best to avoid the deal.

✔ Check with the DVLA: You may have bought a vehicle and not know who to contact to get information on some previous services – for example, if it was bought through a third party or has had multiple previous owners. The DVLA stores information on a vehicle’s previous keepers which you can use to track down a lost service history.

✔ Find MOT Service history for free: You can check a car’s MOT history for free, whether you own it or not, with hpi. This won’t offer information on all services, but it will show repairs and faults (both minor and major) that the vehicle has had when undergoing its annual MOT.

Why should I check my car service history?

Even if a car has a full service history, it’s still worth your while to check the rest of its history.

A premium hpi check® offers more than 80 data points to give you a fuller picture of your vehicle’s life up to this point. Check a sample hpi check® report to see how much information is included.

A car may well have a full service book with all its stamps, but that will be no good to you if it’s just been stolen from someone’s drive and sold on to you. A stolen vehicle check is just one of the many benefits of a full hpi check®.
